The Mt. Zion Story

Mt. Zion African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church was established in 1870.  When the church was established it was located on or near Lawrenceville Highway and its name was Rocky Knoll AME Church.  Many years later the church was moved from its original location, on or near Lawrenceville Highway, to its present location at 2977 Lavista Road in Decatur.

The land was given to Mt. Zion by one of the prominent families in the church, and the structure placed on the land was an old boxcar.  Several years after they were on Lavista Road a building was erected to replaced the old boxcar and the church’s name was changed from Rocky Knoll to Mt. Zion.

Over the years, through many additions and improvements, Mt. Zion flourished under the leadership of more than thirty-five earnest, longsighted, and dedicated pastors.  In 1971, the Rev. E. F. Robinson was assigned to Mt. Zion.  It was during his tenure that firm construction plans were put in motion for a new church building and the building fund was increased.

In 1993, the Reverend Dr. McClellon D. Cox was assigned to Mt. Zion.  Under Rev. Dr. Cox's leadership, the building program was advanced.  In 2000 the old church structure was demolished, and in July 2001 the current church structure was completed and Reverend Dr. McClellon D. Cox, the 38th pastor of the church, and the congregation marched into the church sanctuary.

July 12, 2013, the Reverend David F. Richards, III was appointed to Mt. Zion.  Rev. Richards is the 39th pastor of Mt. Zion AME Church.

No pastor can succeed without the cooperation of members and friends.  In addition to the many pastors who have contributed to the growth of Mt. Zion, we acknowledge the important roles played by many stalwart and dedicated ministers, members and friends.  Some living and some gone from labor to reward, who nurtured the church to greater life and service.  For all of their services, we are grateful and we say to God be the glory.  No church can succeed without the cooperation of pastors, ministers, members and friends.  To all of those who have passed from labor to reward, and to all who are yet with us, we say "Thank you, thank you, thank you."

It does not yet appear what heights, depths, or widths Mt. Zion will reach fueled by God's blessings, everlasting love and faithfulness, "but we must run on and see what the end will be."  With God's leadership and direction we know the best is yet to come.

To God Be The Glory!!!
